Our itinerary

Day 1 - 01.04.2026 - Baku

  • arrived at our apartment at 0300 hours and to our delight they gave us a 200 m flat with three bedrooms, three Bathrooms, hot tub baths, living room, dining room and full kitchen - What a great wonderful welcome to Baku
  • following a few hours sleep we enjoyed late breakfast/early lunch in traditional Azer restaurant 
  • enjoyed a stroll down Baku Boulevard -  a long, scenic promenade featuring parks, cafes, and waterfront views
  • gazed in awe at the city’s spectacular skyline the center piece of it being the famous Flame Towers
  • all of us being F1 Racing fanatics we walked the Azerbaijan Grand Prix race route on foot 
  • visited the famius “Sculpture Girl with Umbrella” statue located in Fountains Square
  • get lost in Baku’s Old City (Icherisheher): A UNESCO World Heritage Site with narrow alleys, ancient stone walls, and the 12th-century Maiden Tower
  • strolled the city again in the evening, enjoying most iconic modern landmarks lit up at night

Day 2 - 02.04.2026 - Baku

  • explored the historic streets of Baku with our local guide Dina - THANK YOU! 
  • visited the Statue of Aliaga Vahid - a unique bronze monument honouring the famous Azerbaijani poet
  • learned about the legends behind the city’s walls and admired Shirvanshaks' Palace
  • visited the workshop of Ali Shamsi - an art gallery and studio located in the Old City of Baku
  • walked through the narrow stone streets of the Old City (Icherisheher) visiting Ismailiyya Palace and Yeraltı hamam
  • visited the beautiful Shas Palace Hotel 
  • took a ride on the Baku Funicular - a cable railway that links the lower part of Baku to Upland Park and Martyrs’ Lane, which are high on a hill with amazing views of the Flame Towers nad the Caspian Sea
  • enjoyed a walk in the Highland Park where we enjoyed the best  panoramic viewpoint in the city
  • seen the worlds tallest and biggest flag pole (3,5 Ton pole ) proudly displaying a 500 kg Azerbaijan flag
  • walked Nizami Street - a premier 3.5 km pedestrian shopping street - a bustling, well-lit tourist hub hosting embassies and iconic Fountain Square
  • enjoyed lunch in the traditional Azerbajian restaurant with our new friend from Mexico!
  • strolled along the beautiful Boulevard, taking in views of the Caspian Sea and Baku’s modern skyline.

Day 3 - 03.04.2026 - Gobustan and Absheron Districts

  • visited the Birthplace of Oil – the first oil well in the world and the very site where the modern oil industry was born - This historic open-air site tells the story of Azerbaijan’s transformative role in fueling the world during the Industrial Revolution
  • visited the Bibi-Heybat Mosque - a symbol of faith and resilience, echoing centuries of Islamic heritage
  • explored the Gobustan Rock Art Reserve - a UNESCO protected National Park where petroglyphs offer a fascinating glimpse into early civilizations that once roamed the Caspian shores
  • took an exciting off-road ride in old Soviet-era 4x4 Lada’s - great fun!!
  • visited the Mud Volcanoes -  Azerbaijan is home to nearly half of the planet’s mud volcanoes - amazing bubbling craters and surreal lunar landscapes
  • stopped at Heydar Aliyev Center - a masterpiece of modern architecture designed by the legendary Zaha Hadid
  • seen the National Stadium where Lady Gaga, Imagine Dragons and Justin Timberlake recently performed 
  • visited the Yanardag Burning Mountain - a rare geological wonder where flames burst straight from the hillside—burning continuously for centuries
  • enjoyed a traditional lunch in the local restaurant - lentil soup and pilav (Meat and saffron rice)
  • visited Ateshgah – The Fire Temple of Baku -  the mystical 17th-century Zoroastrian fire temple, where natural gas flames once guided spiritual rituals
  • arrived back in Baku and changed apartments - the new one is even bigger and has an amazing view of the Flame Towers!
  • took an evening walk in the Old Town where we purchased some souvenirs and enjoyed the energy of a Saturday night in central Baku

Day 4 - 04.04.2026 - Baku

  • enjoyed a lazy morning due to the rainy weather outside
  • explored the wide range of art collections and exhibitions in the Heydar Aliyev Centre
  • enjoyed its wonderfully flowing structure - designed by Zaha Hadid, a internationally recognized architect and Pritzker Prize winner
  • visited Retro Car Exhibition - featured a curated collection of about 60 rare, restored vintage cars from Germany, the USA, France, Italy, and the Soviet Union
  • explored Miniature Book Museum collection - the world's first and only dedicated miniature book museum, featuring over 5,600 unique tiny books from 76 countries
  • visited The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum - the specialized carpet museum, designed to resemble a rolled-up carpet, features over 6,000 items, including rare 17th-20th century carpets, jewelry, and clothing
  • enjoyed go-kart racing at spectacular and exciting Daniz karting experience with a 463 m long 2 level indoor track
  • enjoyed traditional dinner and live music at Old Garden Restaurant

Day 5 - 05.04.2026 - Baku

  • visited Caravanserai - a historical, fortified roadside inn used by travelers and merchants on the Silk Road to rest, store goods, and house animals, located in the Icherisheher (Old City)
  • went for last dinner in the Old Town with our new friends Vadim and Alfonso 

Most Interesting Facts about Baku

  • Ancient names of Baku: Ateshi Baquan, meaning “God’s fire” - Bād-kube, meaning "Wind-pounded city" - Baghkuy, meaning "God's town". In later sources the city was named as BakukhBakuyaBakuye and Baku. Nowadays, Azerbaijan is using the Latin alphabet, and it is spelled as "Bakı" [bɑˈcɯ].
  • In 1823, the world's first paraffin factory was built in Baku.
  • In 1846, the world's first oil well was drilled in Bibi-Heybat suburb of Baku.
  • In 1850, Baku had a population of 7400 people.
  • Zoroaster – the world’s first tanker ship was launched in Baku in 1878 by Brothers Nobel.
  • The capital of the world-renowned Nobel Prize has its revenues also of Baku oil, by Alfred Nobel.
  • In Baku, the oldest offshore oil platform – “Neft Daslari” set Guinness World Records as the first in the world. Neft Daslari is an entire functioning town constructed in the Caspian Sea 55 km from the coast of Azerbaijan. Construction began in 1949 and began oil production in 1951. Construction and development continued until the town included hotels, hostels, a bakery, a power station, and a total of 7 ha of surface area, consisting of separate ‘islands’ connected by more than 200 km of trestle bridges, all supported on metal stilts. Although much of Neft Daslari has been reclaimed by the sea, its rigs still produce oil and the town has a population of around 5,000.
  • Most important sceneries of the James Bond movie – “The World Is Not Enough” was filmed in “Neft Daslari” oil platform.
  • At the beginning of the 20th century, Baku produced more than half of the world's oil (11 million tons or 212,000 barrels (33,700 m3) of oil per day). During World War II, Baku provided the Soviet army with oil and covered 85% of its demand.
  • On 8 February 1924, the first tram line and two years later the first electric railway in the USSR started to operate in Baku-Surakhany.
  • The first and only air conditioning factory in the USSR started to operate in Baku in 1970. Cuba was the largest buyer of Baku air conditioners.
  • Baku is a "sister city" with 20 cities around the world. These include Houston city of Texas in U.S., Istanbul and Izmir in Turkey, Iran's Tabriz, Italy's Naples, Iraq's Basra, Saudi Arabia's Jeddah, South Africa’s Johannesburg, Moscow, etc.
  • Most of the mud volcanoes of the world are located in Baku Absheron peninsula. On September 5, 2004 the greatest mud volcano in the territory of Azerbaijan was added into the Guinness World Records. Geologists of NASA concluded that the mud volcanoes of Azerbaijan are similar to uplands of the Mars planet for their structure.
  • The first opera of the Muslim world was staged in Baku: “Leyli and Majnun” in 1908, by Uzeyir Hajibeyov.
  • Baku State University, the first university in Azerbaijan, was established on November 15, 1919.
  • In Formula 1 history, the highest top speed was recorded in Baku in “2016 European Grand Prix” by Valtteri Bottas (Finland): 378 km/h (234.878 mph)
